About Staghorm Fern
Staghorns are easy to grow when mounted and make great low-maintenance houseplants. Their interesting foliage resembles the furry fronds of deer or elk antlers protruding from a central shield frond (known as a nest frond) where the plants grow.
Easy to Grow at Home
While staghorn ferns may seem difficult, they actually thrive with little care when properly mounted. Simply mount the plant onto a board, log, or other surface using wire, moss, and a little soil mix in the nest frond. Allow it to dry slightly between waterings.
Air Plant Qualities
As epiphytes, staghorn ferns grow without soil by clinging onto trees and deriving moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and debris around them. This makes them perfect for mounting indoors.
Mounted staghorn ferns make stunning, low-maintenance houseplants that double as living art pieces for your walls or outdoor space. Buy your staghorn fern plant online today!
Tips on Growing Staghorn Fern Plant | Platycerium bifurcatum
Water: Staghorn Fern plants prefer to be watered thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the top few inches of the mounting medium (usually sphagnum moss or a similar material) to dry out between waterings. When watering, aim to saturate the roots and the mounting medium, but avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Lighting Conditions: These ferns thrive in bright, indirect light. Place them in a location with plenty of filtered sunlight or indirect sunlight. Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, as it can scorch their fronds. They can tolerate lower light conditions but may not grow as vigorously.
Ideal Temperature: Staghorn Ferns prefer temperatures between 60°F to 80°F (16°C to 27°C). They can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but are sensitive to frost and cold drafts. Protect them from sudden temperature fluctuations and keep them away from cold drafts from windows or doors.
Fertilizer: During the growing season in spring and summer, feed your Staghorn Fern with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Apply the fertilizer to the mounting medium or spray it directly onto the fronds. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. Avoid overfertilizing, as it can damage the roots.
By following these tips, you can help your Staghorn Fern thrive and showcase its unique and stunning fronds!
